The Story Behind Rang

Rang is Shafqat Amanat Ali's gentler interpretation of Amir Khusrau's Sufi kalam, released on the 2015 album Muh Dikhai.

Issued by Times Music, the nine-track record was Ali's third solo album, bringing devotional music together with romantic songs and a ghazal. Rang occupies the fifth place in that sequence. Its source is Aaj Rang Hai, a text associated with Khusrau's spiritual attachment to Nizamuddin Auliya. Ali gives the familiar qawwali a softer, leisurely treatment within a compact album recording, letting the repeated refrain carry the performance. The track belongs to Muh Dikhai's devotional strand, alongside the title song, and shows how his solo album work makes room for an established Sufi repertoire.

Meaning & Translation

Rang means colour. In this Sufi poem, colour expresses the joy of being transformed by love and spiritual belonging. The refrain announces that the speaker's world has become vivid with the beloved's presence. Its address to a mother makes that ecstasy feel intimate, like happiness too great to keep to oneself. Within the poem's devotional setting, the beloved and the spiritual guide point towards a deeper encounter with the divine. The repeated image of colour suggests being immersed in that love until it changes how everything around you is seen.
