The Story Behind Resistance
Resistance is Abdullah Siddiqui's English-language electronic pop song, presented on NESCAFÉ Basement Season 5 in 2019 after he first released it independently in August 2018. Siddiqui wrote and recorded the original in three days while ill, with the words reflecting his state of mind. For the Basement version, Jamal Rahman and Xulfi co-produced the track, translating its laptop-built electronics into a live arrangement. Rahman's synths and vocoder meet Aron Daniel's drum pads, a laser harp played by Ahmad Butt, and the booming dhulara played by Hasan Zafar and Ali Awan. The synchronized lighting and visual design turn that arrangement into a tightly coordinated audiovisual performance. The release brought Siddiqui, then 18, to a broader Pakistani audience and showed how electronic pop could command a full live-band setting.
Meaning & Translation
The title Resistance literally means opposition to a force. Here, Abdullah Siddiqui turns that force inward. The song follows someone trying to escape a self-made cage, abandon old patterns, and rewrite his ending, yet repeatedly confronting the limits of that rebellion. Its central question is not whether suffering is real, but whether perspective changes its scale. Siddiqui has explained that the song concerns experiences that are not universal and problems that can grow from a lack of perspective. The tension between wanting freedom and asking to remain bound keeps the ending deliberately unsettled. Self-awareness has arrived, but release still requires a choice rather than another act of escape.
