The Story Behind Rohi

Rohi brings Khwaja Ghulam Farid's Sufi verse into Shafqat Amanat Ali's 2008 debut solo album, Tabeer. The song draws on a traditional kafi associated with Zahida Parveen, whose earlier rendition preceded this interpretation. Shafqat reshaped the music and adjusted some of the original Seraiki wording for a contemporary audience.

A spare opening and a prominent flute line give the recording its gentle character. The combination keeps the older folk material audible while placing it within Tabeer's blend of inherited Sufi poetry and modern popular music. Released by Music Today, the album marked Shafqat's first solo statement after his work with Fuzon.

Meaning & Translation

Rohi is the desert landscape evoked in the song, a place that becomes inseparable from the beloved. The speaker feels that distance from the loved one has emptied life of warmth, yet the beloved's image remains present within. Returning home and meeting again become ways of imagining relief from separation.

Read as a love song, it is a plea for someone absent to come back. Read through its Sufi roots, that same longing becomes a search for spiritual closeness. The desert is both a real setting and an emotional space: outwardly vast and lonely, inwardly full of hope that a single encounter might restore what separation has taken away.
