The Story Behind Saaqi

Released as the first track from Nescafé Basement Season 6 in December 2024, “Saaqi” brings Ittehad Band together with guest vocalist Sanya Shahzad under producer Rakae Jamil. Zain ul Aabdin, Shahzad and Jamil composed the song, while Ghulam Ullah wrote its Sindhi lyrics and Shahzad supplied the English words. The performance moves between those languages as Aabdin’s forceful lead meets Shahzad’s clear, contemporary response. Its live ensemble gives the song its momentum: layered acoustic guitars ride over cajon and wambooka percussion, with bass, harmonium and melodic fills thickening the refrain. As the season’s opening release, “Saaqi” announced Nescafé Basement’s return through a collaboration that joins a traditional poetic image to a bright, high-energy band arrangement.

Meaning & Translation

“Saaqi” means “cupbearer,” the figure who pours wine in Persian and South Asian poetic tradition. Here the tavern, the intoxicating cup and the newly arrived guest turn desire into a scene of emotional surrender. The Sindhi verses dwell on a beloved whose smile, eyes and hair unsettle the heart, while the English passages make that longing direct and mutual. The cup is therefore more than a drink: it suggests the rush of love, inspiration and the wish to lose ordinary restraint. Because the saaqi can represent a beloved or a spiritual guide in Sufi verse, the song leaves its intoxication deliberately open, poised between earthly romance and mystical yearning.
