The Story Behind Shayar
Shayar brought Faris Shafi and the qawwali duo Zain Zohaib together to open Velo Sound Station Season 3 in April 2025. Composed by Zain Zohaib and Faris Shafi, with production by Polarite Productions, the track lets two musical traditions meet without sanding down either voice. Shafi begins with an unusually long, poetry-led entrance before the arrangement snaps into a dark electronic pulse; Zain Zohaib answer with soaring qawwali vocals. The contrast between clipped rap, traditional melodic phrasing, trap-weighted rhythm and a hypnotic alap gives the nearly six-minute song its restless scale. Bilal Lashari's cinematic video mirrors that movement, carrying Shafi through a theatrical crowd before the performance opens out into a full spectacle. The result feels both confrontational and celebratory, built around the force of words, voice and self-invention.
Meaning & Translation
Shayar means poet in Urdu, and the song treats poetry as both a mirror and a weapon. Its central movement is inward: the narrator asks for a path from the self toward a truer version of the self, while fire and water suggest opposing forces held inside one person. That reflective idea is repeatedly interrupted by Faris Shafi's comic boasts, sharp warnings and quick changes of tone. Zain Zohaib's qawwali passages give the search a spiritual weight, turning private conflict into a call to wake up and look clearly. The song ultimately links artistic confidence with self-knowledge: the shayar can entertain a crowd, but his real journey is the short, difficult distance within.
