The Story Behind Sukoon
Ali Zafar's Sukoon is an Urdu spoken word single he wrote and recited during the 2020 lockdown. The poem is dated April 6 in the description of his official YouTube upload, which followed on April 10. At a moment when ordinary activity had stopped, Zafar introduced the piece as an example of creativity continuing to flow. Its repeated question about finding peace returns after images of outside turmoil, solitude and self examination, giving the recitation a refrain without a sung chorus. His Bandcamp lists Sukoon as a standalone digital track. This is Zafar's 2020 poetry recording, separate from the later Sukoon television soundtrack performed by Hassan & Roshaan with Shae Gill.
Meaning & Translation
Sukoon means peace or tranquility in Urdu, but the speaker does not claim to have found a simple refuge. The poem sets a turbulent outer world against the unfamiliar quiet of isolation. As he sits with himself, memories of hurt, rejection and pride surface alongside questions about who he has become. The recurring question about peace keeps changing weight: it can read as relief, disbelief or a challenge to his own certainty. In English, the poem is less a promise that solitude cures pain than an account of what silence exposes. Calm arrives together with self scrutiny, and the speaker is still learning whether it will last.
