The Story Behind Sultanat
Karachi rock band Aunty Disco Project brought "Sultanat," a song already in its repertoire, to Coke Studio Pakistan's third season in 2010. The band's own 2009 account discussed the song before that season, and the official upload names Rohail Hyatt as producer. On the Coke Studio stage, Omar Bilal Akhtar led a guitar and vocal lineup with Ali Alam and Rahayl Sidikey, while Yasir Qureshi played darbuka and Giles Goveas played drums. A contemporary Dawn review singled out the darbuka solo and the prominent female backing voices, hearing a jolt of rock energy in the episode. That contrast gives this version its character: guitars and restless percussion drive a searching Urdu lyric without smoothing away the band's live edge.
Meaning & Translation
Sultanat means a kingdom or realm in Urdu. Here the word reaches beyond a throne: the singer imagines gaining a kingdom, lifting a flag and rising toward the sky, then questions what any of that would solve. The repeated uncertainty turns images of command into a search for direction. He is drawn toward a light he cannot quite claim and asks how to leave the world he knows or walk an unfamiliar road. The song's bright, forceful sound makes that tension sharper. Power looks grand from a distance, but the voice at the centre of the song still wants a reason to move forward.
