The Story Behind Muh Dikhai (Teri Khoj)
Muh Dikhai (Teri Khoj) is Shafqat Amanat Ali's Punjabi setting of a poem by Mohan Singh, released on the 2015 album Muh Dikhai. Ali sings and composes the track, while Singh's words give the record its searching spiritual voice. Issued by Times Music, the nine-song album was his third solo release, following Kyun Dooriyan.
Ali singled out this title piece and Rang as the album's Sufi selections, describing them among the songs that shaped the project. The poem is Rabb, meaning God, and its questions turn the familiar language of a hidden beloved toward the divine. That questioning refrain gives the track a distinct place beside the album's romantic songs: love becomes a search for an answer that remains elusive.
Meaning & Translation
Teri Khoj means "the search for you" in Punjabi. The "you" is God, addressed with the intimacy of a beloved whose face stays hidden. Muh Dikhai refers to revealing a face, drawing on the image of a bride's unveiling to imagine an encounter with the divine.
The poem asks why that revelation remains out of reach despite human effort, devotion and suffering. Its longing is sharpened by frustration: searching has not produced certainty. Read this way, the refrain carries both desire and a challenge. The speaker wants closeness, but also asks whether the sacrifices made in seeking it can ever bring an answer.
