The Story Behind Thaam Lo

Thaam Lo is the ballad at the centre of Parwaaz Hai Junoon, the 2018 HUM Films release made in association with the Pakistan Air Force, and the song that introduced Azaan Sami Khan as a film composer.

Atif Aslam sings it softly rather than powerfully, holding back the big notes so the title phrase carries the weight every time it returns. Shakeel Sohail wrote the lyrics and Saad Sultan produced the music. HUM TV posted the video on 27 July 2018, several weeks ahead of the film's Eid ul Adha opening, cutting the song against the cast riding bicycles through mountain roads, and the Express Tribune wrote that it was impossible not to fall for the track. Azaan Sami Khan's full soundtrack album arrived that December, by which point Parwaaz Hai Junoon had become one of the highest grossing Pakistani films ever released.

Meaning & Translation

Thaam lo is Urdu for hold on, or more literally take hold, and the song uses the phrase as both a plea and a promise. The singer asks someone to take his hand and keep hold of it, and offers to do the same in return.

Shakeel Sohail keeps the vocabulary plain on purpose. There is no grand declaration here, only the small request that runs through the refrain: thaam lo, hold on. Placed in a film about cadets learning to fly, the line reads two ways at once, as a love song about not letting go of a person and as reassurance for anyone about to leave the ground. That double reading is what gives it staying power.
