The Umbrella Song

The Story Behind The Umbrella Song

The Umbrella Song builds Bilal Saeed's Punjabi pop around a folk-inspired refrain, with Fateh joining as a featured vocalist. Originally released by One Two Records in October 2022, it returned on Saeed's 12-track album Superstar in October 2024. The label published this visualiser a week after the album, naming Saeed as the track's author and composer.

Speaking to Apple Music about Superstar, Saeed described folk music as the starting point for the writing, continuing an approach he had explored on Paranday. He also connected the original music video's concept to questioning narrow standards of beauty. The recurring umbrella refrain supplies the song's central hook. Saeed said he kept the track on Superstar to give listeners another chance to connect with it.

Meaning & Translation

The umbrella in the English title refers to chhatri, the Punjabi word for an umbrella. The refrain's invitation to share its shade turns an everyday object into a way of asking someone to come closer. The speaker is overwhelmed by attraction, struggling to control his heart while trying to sound confident enough to win a reply. Compliments, teasing complaints and the image of a stolen heart make this a playful courtship rather than a lament. Beneath the bravado is a straightforward wish for the feeling to be mutual: he wants the beloved to answer his affection in her own words.
