The Story Behind Titiliyaan
Titiliyaan is Strings' reflective Urdu song, first released on the band's 2008 album Koi Aanay Wala Hai and revisited for Coke Studio Pakistan Season 2 in 2009. The session pairs Strings with producer Rohail Hyatt, while Bilal Maqsood composed the song and Anwar Maqsood wrote its words. At just over seven minutes, the Coke Studio performance expands beyond the five-minute album cut, giving its recurring image of memories in flight a patient, spacious frame. Strings later explained that Bilal conceived the song's original video as a tribute to departed Pakistani cultural figures, with director Soheb Akhtar developing that idea. That context deepens the track's sense of collective remembrance: an intimate song of loss also becomes a way of keeping artists, writers, musicians and actors present in memory.
Meaning & Translation
Titiliyaan means butterflies in Urdu. The song imagines memories as bright, restless butterflies that keep moving through the mind after a loved companion is gone. Beauty and grief sit together: remembered light, flowers, birdsong and a familiar courtyard remain vivid, yet the relationship that gave them warmth has ended. The speaker also carries regret for feelings left unspoken and for continuing alone. Rather than narrating a single event, the refrain returns to the way memory behaves after loss, delicate and colorful but impossible to hold. Its central idea is that love can disappear from daily life while its images continue to flutter through the person left behind.
