The Story Behind Tori Chab

Tori Chab brings Rustam Fateh Ali Khan and Turkish vocalist Sumru Ağıryürüyen together in Coke Studio Pakistan Season 6, with Rohail Hyatt producing the 2013 recording. The performance begins in the rare Abhogi Kangra raga, then folds in the traditional Anatolian song Kalenin Burcu Muyam, linking two love traditions through melody rather than translation.

Its international arrangement gives the voices an unusually broad canvas: Göksel Baktagir's kanun, Kaw Dialy Madi Sissoko's kora and Driss Berrada's oud add distinct plucked colors around the Serbian house band and string orchestra. Rachel and Zoe Viccaji provide backing vocals without displacing the billed pair. Across nearly ten minutes, Rustam's classically shaped phrases and Sumru's Turkish folk delivery trade perspectives on longing, while the recurring melody keeps the large ensemble anchored.

Meaning & Translation

In Braj, Tori Chab means "your beauty," and Rustam's section addresses a beloved whose appearance and expressive eyes inspire complete surrender. Sumru's Turkish passage, drawn from Kalenin Burcu Muyam, shifts the feeling toward separation and the uncertainty of love returned.

Its images of kohl-darkened eyes and hennaed hands place desire in familiar folk language, while the repeated questions make affection sound restless rather than secure. Bringing the two texts together reveals their shared emotional core: admiration becomes longing, and longing asks for reciprocity. The performance does not tell a linear story; it lets parallel traditions circle the same hope that loving someone will awaken love in them.
