The Story Behind Wo Ishq Jo Ham Se
Hadiqa Kiani's Wo Ishq Jo Ham Se is a live Urdu ghazal from a 2020 evening honouring Farida Khanum at Lahore's Alhamra Art Centre. The concert, titled Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na Karo, was organised by the Salman Sufi Foundation as the opening tribute in its Aik Shaam cultural series. Khanum attended as the guest of honour, while Kiani and Ali Sethi paid tribute through their performances. Journalist Wusatullah Khan moderated a conversation with the three singers.
Kiani shared this six-minute performance on her official channel on 5 March 2020. The ghazal draws on Athar Nafees's poetry, exploring a love that has withdrawn and the difficulty of finding words for that loss. Its focus on Urdu verse places the performance within the ghazal tradition the evening celebrated.
Meaning & Translation
The shortened title, Wo Ishq Jo Ham Se, points to a love that has turned away from the speaker. Ishq means intense love, and the opening image treats it as a presence capable of taking offence and withdrawing. What remains is neither affection nor anger, but a silence that makes honest expression difficult.
The ghazal can be read as heartbreak, yet its question about truthful poetry reaches beyond a lost relationship. Love also becomes the feeling that gives words their purpose. When that feeling disappears, the speaker still remembers its force but struggles to speak with conviction. The ache lies in wanting to express a loss that has emptied the very language needed to describe it.
