The Story Behind Yaad Sajan (Live)
Released in 2018 as part of Virsa Heritage Revived, this concert version revisits Hadiqa Kiani's 2002 song "Yaad Sajan" at Haveli Barood Khana in Lahore, in a presentation by Mian Yousaf Salahuddin. Riaz-Ur-Rahman Saghar wrote the lyrics, while Irfan Kiani and Hadiqa Kiani composed the song. The twelve-minute performance uses a spacious live arrangement led by Irfan Kiani, who also mixed and produced the recording. Baqir Abbas plays flute, Steve George adds guitar and baghlama, Asif Ali Goga provides tabla, and Irfan Kiani and Imran Ali play harmoniums. Irfan, Ali, Raja, Amjad and Dilawar contribute handclaps and backing vocals. That ensemble setting distinguishes this version from the shorter studio original, framing Hadiqa Kiani's lead vocal with folk instrumentation and the collective energy of a mehfil.
Meaning & Translation
Yaad Sajan means "memory of the beloved," while the refrain's fuller phrase, "yaad sajan di aayi," conveys that the beloved has suddenly come to mind. The song dwells on separation: remembrance fills the singer's eyes with tears and revives moments of intimacy that cannot be recovered in the present. Its recurring words turn memory into both comfort and pain, because recalling love briefly restores the beloved's presence while making the distance sharper. In the extended live version, that repetition feels almost meditative. The "sajan" may be heard as a human lover or, through a Sufi lens, as the divine beloved, but the emotional core is the same: longing makes absence vividly present.
