The Story Behind Zehal-e-Miskin

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan closes the Parey Hut Love soundtrack with a ghazal seven centuries older than the film: Amir Khusrau's Zehal-e-Miskin, carried here on the composition his uncle Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan made of it. Asim Raza's romantic comedy reached cinemas on Eid ul Azha in August 2019, and ARY Films and The Vision Factory Films put the soundtrack out a month earlier, on 10 July.

Azaan Sami Khan, who scored the film, takes the music credit on the track, with Saad Sultan producing the recording. At eight minutes it runs longer than anything else on the six song album and is its only qawwali, set well apart from the light film pop around it. Hadiqa Kiani, Aima Baig and Zeb Bangash sing the rest of the record; this is the one track that reaches back into the qawwali repertoire.

Meaning & Translation

The title is Persian: zi hal-e miskin, the state of a wretched one. The opening line asks the beloved not to be careless with it, not to look away and spin stories instead. Khusrau built the ghazal in two tongues, a Persian hemistich answered by one in old Hindavi, so the plea arrives first in the language of the court and then in the language of the street.

Its most quoted couplet is also its darkest: shabaan-e-hijraan daraaz chun zulf, the nights of separation are long as a lover's hair, and the day of union as short as a life. What Rahat sings is less a lament for a lost love than an argument with an indifferent one.
