PTV's 50-50 turns everyday Pakistani life into a rapid-fire parade of sketches, parodies and musical spoofs. Created during the late 1970s, the series uses Anwar Maqsood's dry wit and Shoaib Mansoor's inventive staging to poke at fussy bureaucrats, police, cricket culture, television advertising, fading Urdu cinema and the social habits people rarely admit in polite company. Its ensemble, including Ismail Tara, Majid Jahangir, Zeba Shehnaz, Ashraf Khan, Bushra Ansari and Moin Akhtar, slips between characters, accents and situations rather than following a single continuing plot.

Beneath the broad comedy sits a sharper purpose: the sketches expose vanity, corruption, class aspiration and imported cultural affectations while finding sly routes around the censorship of General Zia's era. That mix of physical performance, wordplay and social observation made 50-50 a defining Pakistani sketch show, and its best routines still feel less like museum pieces than comedy built to be rediscovered.

Editor’s Take

Anwar Maqsood's finest trick is making the censor part of the joke. The ensemble turns bureaucrats, cricketers and pompous social climbers into wonderfully elastic comic targets, while Shoaib Mansoor's staging keeps even dialogue-light sketches snapping along. Our one reservation? The ethnic caricatures that drew complaints during the original run have not aged as gracefully as the political slyness. Still, when 50-50 slips a blade beneath the silliness, Pakistani television satire rarely feels sharper.
