About Aunn Zara
Aunn (Osman Khalid Butt) is the pampered darling of an overprotective, overbearing family, and he is dying to break free of it. Zara (Maya Ali), just as indulged at home, is otherwise his polar opposite: headstrong, vivacious, and the only woman in a house she shares with her father and grandfather (Irfan Khoosat). Her father Jamshed (Adnan Jaffar), a retired army officer, wants her in the air force, while Zara would much rather build a family life of her own. Their first meeting goes badly, and a misunderstanding lands Aunn's marriage proposal in front of Zara's family. When the two discover whom they are marrying, both resist, then go ahead with the wedding anyway, each hoping it will get them out from under their relatives. Written by Faiza Iftikhar from her novel Hisaar-e-Mohabbat and directed by Haissam Hussain, this 2013 A Plus romantic comedy finds its heart in two eccentric households and the couple caught between them.
Editor’s Take
Comedy is brutally hard to pull off, and this one makes it look effortless. Osman Khalid Butt keeps a selfish, sheltered Aunn impossible to dislike, while Maya Ali's Zara, far too practical for bridal blushes, felt genuinely modern, pulling younger viewers into a genre long left to aunties and uncles. Faiza Iftikhar's script sparkles. Our one gripe? For all that freshness, it rarely pushes back on the traditional gender roles its households run on. Spoilt rotten, and all the sweeter for it.
