About Beti

Maryam (Saheefa Jabbar Khattak) is an educated young woman who believes marriage to Ashar (Fahad Mirza) will begin a loving new chapter. Instead, she enters a household ruled by Shahana (Asma Abbas), a grandmother whose obsession with male heirs turns every pregnancy into a test of obedience. As pressure closes around Maryam and her sister-in-law Sonia (Zainab Ahmed), the family's prejudice stops being an old-fashioned opinion and becomes a danger to the daughters in their care. Written by Soofia Khurram, Beti gives its heroine a clear, urgent fight: protect her child while holding together a marriage strained by fear, loyalty and inherited cruelty. Javed Sheikh, Hassan Ahmed and Naima Khan fill out a family in which silence can be as damaging as open hostility. This is emotionally direct social drama, built around a mother refusing to let her daughter's worth be decided before she has the chance to live.

Saheefa Jabbar Khattak gives Maryam a spine that keeps Beti from drowning in its own misery, and Asma Abbas makes every family gathering feel like a trap closing shut. We admire how fiercely the serial treats a daughter's right to exist. Our one gripe? Its villains are painted so darkly that nuance sometimes loses to sermon, while Maryam endures one ordeal too many. Still, this is purposeful melodrama with a pulse, and its anger is hard to shake.
