About Chalawa

Horror is rare territory for Pakistani television, and Chalawa plants its flag firmly in the supernatural. The story follows Sawera, a young woman marked since birth by a chalawa, a malevolent jinn that has shadowed her family across generations. Raised by her devoted mother Mahnoor, Sawera grows up sensing that something unseen wants to claim her, and the ordinary rhythms of love, family, and marriage keep colliding with a darkness that refuses to let go. Naveen Waqar, Ali Ansari, Noor Zafar Khan, and Usama Khan anchor a cast asked to sell dread rather than domestic melodrama, moving the show from creaking houses to a centuries-old battle between good and evil. Directed by Najaf Bilgrami and Shamoon Abbasi and written by Shahid Nizami, it trades the usual love triangles for possession, suspense, and a heroine fighting to hold on to her own soul.

Give Chalawa credit for nerve: in a landscape drowning in saas-bahu tears and love triangles, it commits fully to jinns, possession, and genuine edge-of-your-seat dread, and that originality is its real hook. The premise is refreshing and the fear actually lands. Our gripe? The scripting and direction can turn amateurish, leaning on jump-scare shorthand when the mood was already doing the heavy lifting. Still, as homegrown horror goes, it's a bold, watchable swing worth taking.
