About Jaal

Jaal means trap, and the title is not subtle about who ends up caught in it. Esha (Sumbul Iqbal) has built the career her husband cannot. She is the achiever at the office, Arsal (Ali Kazmi) is the subordinate who married her, and every step she takes forward lands at home as an insult he cannot swallow. Seema Munaf's story turns that quiet resentment into wreckage when Esha's own sister Zonia (Sukaina Khan) begins an affair with him, then marries him, leaving two families that shared everything to pick sides through a divorce nobody comes out of clean. Then comes the harder turn: Esha's mother (Ismat Zaidi) leaves a will asking her to marry Arsal's younger brother Zaid (Imran Ashraf), a man who has loved her in silence for years. Mohsin Talat directs this 32-episode HUM TV serial about ambition, envy, and a family that closes ranks around the wrong person.

Editor’s Take

Jaal led its slot for a reason, and the reason is Imran Ashraf: the brother who loved Esha in silence and then arrives as a rescue nobody asked for, played without a drop of self-pity. Our gripe is the script's oldest reflex, two sisters set against each other over one thoroughly ordinary man, plus a lot of tutting about how women ought to behave in public. Watch it for the cast, roll your eyes at the moralising.
