About Jub We Wed

A dying mother's last wish sets everything spinning: her son (Danish Taimoor) must come home to Pakistan and marry one of three girls, all of them his first cousins. He agrees, and the search for a bride sends him from one household to the next with his best friend along for the ride. The trouble is that the one person he cannot stop arguing with is Nisha (Ayeza Khan), and every round of their love-hate sparring circles back to something neither of them will say out loud. Watching it all is the mother herself (Bushra Ansari), who keeps turning up long after her death to weigh in on his choices. Then there is Zero (Furqan Qureshi), a boy who likes Nisha and offers her the future she is starting to doubt she will ever get. Urdu1's 2014 comedy, written by Mohsin Ali, who directed it with Wajahat Rauf.

Editor’s Take

Bushra Ansari's mother is the best idea here: she dies in the first act and then simply keeps turning up to weigh in on the shortlist, which is funnier than most of the proposals. Danish Taimoor and Ayeza Khan bicker with real charm, and against a schedule of grim, weepy serials that lightness was the whole point. Our gripe? A bride hunt with three candidates does not need five months of running in circles. Come for the ghost, stay for the sparring.
