About MAIDAAN
The whistle blows on a story Pakistani television almost never tells: a girls' football team, and everything the world says they should be doing instead. Maidaan follows a coach (Faysal Quraishi) trying to build that team out of nothing, a search that takes him into Lyari's streets after a street player known as Lady Ronaldo. What he assembles is less a squad than a set of arguments: Dananeer Mobeen, Romaisa Khan, Vardah Aziz and Mehar Bano play young women whose families, neighbourhoods and own doubts all have something to say about a daughter in boots. Written by Radain Shah and directed by Uzma Zakaria, ARY Digital's special telefilm trades the drawing room for the touchline and keeps its eye on one stubborn idea: that courage, a coach who believes you, and the right to be on the field at all can be enough.
Editor’s Take
Give ARY this much: swapping the saas bahu drawing room for a football pitch, and handing the centre of the frame to four young women in boots, is a braver swing than primetime usually takes. Our one gripe? Viewers had it renamed Chak De Pakistan before the telefilm even aired, and Faysal Quraishi's bearded coach does nothing to shake the comparison. Borrowed blueprint, sure. We'll still take it, because nobody here had bothered to tell this story at all.
