About Mayi Ri

Aini (Aina Asif) is a bright, ambitious fifteen-year-old who loves school and dreams of a future she is building for herself, raised by her devoted single mother inside a crowded joint family. When her ailing uncle decides, in his final months, that his young son Fakhir (Samar Abbas) must be married, the family fixes on Aini, and despite the mothers' protests the two children are wed long before either is ready. What follows is the slow, painful collision between a childhood cut short and the grown-up burdens suddenly placed on it: a household that expects a wife and daughter-in-law where there is still a schoolgirl, and dreams that refuse to die quietly. Created and written by Sana Fahad and produced by Fahad Mustafa for ARY Digital, Mayi Ri is a hard-hitting social drama about child marriage, the families who enable it, and one girl's fight to hold on to the life she was promised.

Editor’s Take

Give it real credit: Mayi Ri dragged an ugly, urgent subject, the marrying-off of children, onto prime time and got a whole country arguing about it, anchored by a genuinely arresting breakout from young Aina Asif. Our problem is with the execution. Too often the show let the underage couple read as a tender teen romance, sweetened with light comedy, until the warning it meant to sound started to feel like the very thing it was warning against. Vital subject, conflicted delivery.
