About Mein Sitara
Lollywood in its 1960s heyday looks like a dream from the outside, and Mein Sitara is about the price of the ticket in. Sitara (Saba Qamar) is a servant girl who wants the one thing her circumstances do not allow, a name of her own, and the studio system that finally gives it to her is the same system that keeps deciding what it costs. Faiza Iftikhar's script follows her from the domestic quarters to the sets, between the pull of the powerful producer Khwaja Ilyas and the memory of her first love Farhad Sethi, and it keeps going long after the applause, tracking her, her choices and the people she made them with across decades of a changing industry. Nauman Ijaz, Mikaal Zulfiqar, Meera and Azfar Rehman fill the studio floor around her, with Seema Taher Khan directing each era in its own light.
Editor’s Take
Period drama on Pakistani TV usually stops at the costumes. This one builds a whole industry, and Saba Qamar carries Sitara across decades without letting the posture or the hurt slip once. Casting Meera, who lived that film world, is the sly stroke nobody talks about. Our one gripe? The opening stretch is pure runway, all dream and formation before the story lifts off. Stay for the takeoff: this was the most underrated thing on air in 2016.
