About Mere Humnawa

Alishba (Alishba Yousuf) is everything a family should be proud of: educated, composed, quietly certain of what she wants. Her mother is not proud, she is calculating. In her ledger a daughter is currency, and the only acceptable groom is one who arrives with money attached, a man who can buy the comfort she has decided she is owed. Haris, Alishba's cousin, would go to the ends of the earth for her, and everyone in the family knows it. He is also poor, which in this house cancels out everything else. Rahat Jabeen's 25 episode ARY Digital serial, directed by Abdullah Badini, sets a young woman's own heart against her mother's arithmetic and lets the household politics do the rest. Azfar Rehman, Nauman Ijaz, Ayesha Toor and Seemi Pasha round out a cast that keeps the pressure squarely domestic.

Here is the tell: the finale out-views the premiere on ARY's own channel, so whatever else this serial did, it kept the people who started it. Credit a premise with teeth, a mother pricing her own daughter, plus a cast list carrying Nauman Ijaz and Seemi Pasha. Our gripe is the one Reviewit landed on: it is predictable to the last frame, and 25 episodes is a long time to watch a story you solved in week two. Watchable, never surprising.
