About NoorPur Ki Rani

Noorpur already has a queen installed in its memory, and Noorulain (Sanam Baloch) arrives there carrying nothing but a childhood of hardship. Orphaned early and raised on other people's charity, Noorie is taken in by a kind family, and when that shelter is gone she crosses paths with Salar (Nauman Ijaz), the prince of Noorpur, and is lifted into a title she never asked for. The household that receives her is still loyal to Rania (Mahnoor Baloch), the princess who came before, and Anna the housekeeper (Samina Peerzada) guards that loyalty like a faith. Samira Fazal transplants Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca into a Pakistani feudal estate and the swap holds, because a young bride measured against a ghost needs no translation. Directed by Haissam Hussain, it is a story of two women who look nothing alike and carry the same bruises.

Editor’s Take

Sanam Baloch plays Noorie like a girl bracing for the next slap, all lowered eyes and swallowed sentences, and the Lux Style Awards nomination she picked up for it was earned. Samina Peerzada is the real chill, though: her Anna runs on devotion to an absent mistress and never once has to raise her voice. Our gripe? Borrowing Rebecca means the big turns arrive already flagged for anyone who knows the novel. Come for the dread, stay for the two women circling each other.
