About Saaya

Saaya plunges a bruised family drama into full-blooded supernatural horror. Sauleha (Maham Amir) is expecting her third child while her loving but ineffectual husband, Rashid (Sohail Sameer), fails to shield her from Ateeqa (Sumbul Shahid), a mother-in-law obsessed with a male heir. When a hospital baby swap sends Sauleha home with another daughter, Ateeqa's cruelty turns toward black magic, and the house begins to feel less like a refuge than a trap. What follows binds maternal devotion, guilt and revenge to a string of paranormal disturbances that engulf both Rashid's family and the household responsible for the exchange. Writer Wajiha Saher gives the familiar saas-bahu battlefield a horror engine, filling it with smoke, shadows and the terrifying suggestion that a mother's protection can outlive her. Come for the haunted-house chills, stay for a story that treats misogyny and the hunger for sons as the true evil lurking behind the spectacle.

Editor’s Take

Saaya works best when it commits to its gloriously pulpy horror vocabulary: black smoke curls through the house, bats take flight and every domestic cruelty seems to summon something worse. Maham Amir gives that supernatural spectacle a wounded maternal pulse, while Sumbul Shahid makes the human menace bite first. Our one gripe? The family torment and hauntings circle familiar ground too often. Still, Pakistani television rarely goes this unapologetically gothic, and we happily dimmed the lights.
