About Sanam

Harib (Osman Khalid Butt) enters marriage convinced that patience and affection can steady any relationship. His new life with Ayla (Hareem Farooq), however, is unsettled by sudden anger, jealousy and the discovery that she is living with bipolar disorder. Across the street, working woman Aan (Maya Ali) and her determined mother Shabnam (Hina Khawaja Bayat) are trying to build a secure future while navigating family expectations and the relentless pressure to find Aan a suitable match. As Harib's past with Sara (Sharmeen Ali), his friendship with Shehroze (Emmad Irfani) and his growing bond with his neighbours begin to overlap, love and loyalty become harder to separate. Written by Mona Haseeb, Sanam folds romance, friendship and domestic tension into a story about the difference between choosing a life partner and recognising a soulmate. Its emotional hook lies in people discovering how little they understand those closest to them.

Editor’s Take

Sanam is strongest whenever Hareem Farooq lets Ayla's suspicion simmer rather than explode; those quieter beats give the domestic tension a nervous pulse. Our gripe is the script's blunt contrast between a difficult wife and an idealised neighbour, which dulls a potentially nuanced look at mental illness, while the early episodes move at a crawl. Hina Khawaja Bayat supplies welcome spark. There is real dramatic promise here, but it keeps arriving late.
