About Zakham (2017)

Zakham opens inside a house where everyone can see the bruises and nobody says the word. Tehreem (Sarwat Gilani), the eldest daughter, is married to Khawar (Faysal Qureshi), a man whose cruelty does not pause for her pregnancy, and she absorbs all of it in silence because she still believes he can become a better man. Her younger sister Takbeer (Madiha Imam) is the one with a future waiting: she loves Moosa, she is engaged, she has a life outside these walls. Then Tehreem dies giving birth, and the newborn she leaves behind rearranges everything. Takbeer raises her sister's son as her own, and her family reads that devotion as an answer, pressing her to break her engagement and marry the very man who broke Tehreem. Written by Sameena Ejaz and directed by Ali Faizan, this 26-episode ARY Digital serial turns duty into a trap and asks what a good sister owes.

Editor’s Take

Madiha Imam is the reason this one works. She barely raises her voice and still walks off with scenes from Shabbir Jan and Faysal Qureshi, both of them excellent, and her porch scene with a grieving Khawar is the best few minutes in the serial. Our gripe? We never see the marriage Khawar suddenly mourns, so his heartbreak reads as a plot turn rather than a wound, and the mother and sister-in-law are left with nothing to do. Watch it for Takbeer.
