The Story Behind 5 AM
Released in October 2017, "5 AM" is a standalone single written, composed and sung by Asim Azhar, with production by Los Angeles-based producer UpsideDown. Azhar described it at the time as a deliberate move beyond his earlier style: he wanted to pair his own melodic approach with the contemporary electronic sound UpsideDown brought to the collaboration. The result is a compact pop track driven by bright synth textures, a steady dance pulse and a hook built for late-night momentum. Its subject, confidence without dependence, also matched Azhar's wider argument for Pakistani artists making original music outside television platforms. Jesse Ray Diamond directed the official video, which arrived on Azhar's own channel on 29 October 2017.
Meaning & Translation
"5 AM" uses the hour before morning as a symbol of clarity after a long night. The song is less about waiting for another person than about deciding not to let anyone else determine your confidence or direction. Its central idea is self-reliance: attraction and uncertainty may keep the mind active, but they do not have to become dependence. The early-morning setting gives that resolve a restless edge, as if the narrator reaches his conclusion while the city is still asleep. Rather than treating independence as isolation, the song presents it as emotional balance, knowing what you want while retaining the freedom to stand on your own.
