The Story Behind Ajab Khail
Ajab Khail is Shafqat Amanat Ali's 2009 Coke Studio Season 2 rendering of Kartar, a traditional Patiala Gharana bandish associated with his father, Ustad Amanat Ali Khan, and uncle, Ustad Bade Fateh Ali Khan. Ali had expanded the inherited sthayi into a complete song, and this performance recast it for Coke Studio under producer Rohail Hyatt. Rooted in raga Darbari, the piece carries the weight of classical lineage into a contemporary ensemble setting without losing its devotional gravity. The repeated invocation works as both a classical refrain and a question about human fate. Presented in the season's fifth episode, Unity, the performance treats an old family composition as a living work, using Ali's commanding classical voice to connect inherited tradition with Coke Studio's modern format.
Meaning & Translation
Ajab Khail means "a strange or wondrous game." The recurring thought, addressed to Kartar, the Creator, marvels at the baffling way life distributes fortune. One person receives kingdoms and treasure while another begs for food; one holds a begging bowl while another wears a crown. The song does not resolve that inequality with a simple lesson. Instead, it turns the contrast into a devotional question, acknowledging that people can see the outcomes but cannot fully grasp the design behind them. Its repetition deepens the sense of awe, sorrow and surrender: worldly status can reverse, yet the Creator remains the source before whom rich and poor are equally dependent.
