The Story Behind Aurangzeb

Mughal-e-Funk brought "Aurangzeb" to Coke Studio Season 11 in 2018, making its first appearance on the platform with an original instrumental inspired by the Mughal era. The quartet of Kami Paul, Farhan Ali, Rakae Jamil and Rufus Shahzad composed the piece, while season producers Zohaib Kazi and Ali Hamza shaped the studio presentation. Sitar and guitar phrases establish its historical palette before a sharp keyboard solo and tabla-driven pulse push the arrangement into tense folk-rock. Backing vocalists Shahab Hussain, Wajiha Naqvi and Mehr Qadir add a wordless tarana that turns the central conflict into human sound. The result places Mughal-e-Funk's modern rhythm section beside South Asian classical textures, a concise statement of the band's history-meets-funk concept.

Meaning & Translation

"Aurangzeb" takes its title from the Mughal emperor and treats his reign as a musical argument rather than a lyrical narrative. The opening sitar and guitar motif introduces the historical figure, while the pointed keyboard line represents a stricter relationship with art and culture. Tabla rhythms answer that authority with movement, and the rising, wordless tarana suggests artists pushing back. Because the piece is instrumental, there is no verse to translate. Its meaning lies in the contrast between control and creative expression, conveyed through disciplined riffs, restless percussion and Mughal-e-Funk's modern funk pulse.
