The Story Behind Balaa OST

Balaa is the title song of the ARY Digital serial of the same name, posted to the channel on 2 October 2018. Waqar Ali composed it, a regular hand on the broadcaster's title cuts, and Sabir Zafar wrote the words. The vocal is shared rather than solo: Faiza Mujahid and Zohaib Hassan sing it as a duet, which lets the same complaint be voiced from two sides. That suits what it introduces. Badar Mehmood directed Zanjabeel Asim Shah's script for producers Fahad Mustafa and Dr. Ali Kazmi, and the serial turns on Nigar (Ushna Shah), a wealthy young woman whose fixation on her cousin Taimoor (Bilal Abbas) hardens from love into a need to own him. At four minutes and forty two seconds it is a full song rather than a trimmed title sequence.

Meaning & Translation

Balaa is Urdu for a calamity or an affliction, and the word carries an older, almost superstitious edge that plain misfortune does not. A balaa is nearer to a curse: an evil that fastens onto a person and will not be shaken off. Naming a love song after it is the whole argument. The title turns the beloved into the disaster, someone who arrives looking like devotion and stays as ruin, and the song leaves that contradiction standing rather than resolving it. The closest English sense is not I love you but you are the ruin that has come to me, which is precisely Nigar's condition in the serial: unable to tell wanting someone apart from destroying them.
