The Story Behind Barfi Laddu OST
The title track of Barfi Laddu arrived on ARY Digital on 27 May 2019, a few weeks before the comedy serial itself premiered at Eid ul Fitr, and it was built for wedding season. Qasim Azhar composed it, Jabir Abbas and Komal Rizvi sing it as a duet, and Zeeshan Ansari directed the video that ARY wrapped around what it advertised as the biggest wedding of the year.
The serial behind it comes from Dr. Muhammad Younis Butt, directed by Syed Ramish Rizvi for iDream Entertainment, and it marries off Sumbul Iqbal's Barfi and Ali Safina's Laddu first, then lets the love story arrive afterwards, refereed by two households of very loud relatives. The song keeps that promise. It runs under three minutes, skips the ballad register most drama title tracks reach for, and stays an upbeat dance number aimed at the shaadi floor.
Meaning & Translation
Both halves of the title are sweets. Barfi is the dense milk fudge, cut into diamonds; laddu is the round one, pressed by hand from gram flour and ghee. They are the two things that turn up on the same tray at every Pakistani wedding and engagement, which is the entire joke in naming a bride Barfi and a groom Laddu. Nothing about them matches: one is cut with a knife, the other rolled in a palm. They get served together anyway.
That is what the song celebrates, and it celebrates rather than pines. This is the wedding party's welcome to a mismatch, closer to what a dholak circle sings at a couple than to a love song sung to one.
