The Story Behind Bebasi OST

Bebasi is the title song of HUM TV's 2021 serial of the same name, composed and sung by Sahir Ali Bagga to words by Irfan Saleem. HUM published the full lyrical version on 26 November 2021, in the opening weeks of the serial's run.

The drama it introduces was written by Aliya Bukhari, directed by Barkat Sidiki and produced by Momina Duraid Productions. It follows Ifrah (Alizeh Shah), a young woman whose sense of home collapses when buried truths about her past begin to surface, while Ali Rehman Khan and Khushhal Khan stand at different points of that emotional maze. Bagga kept the vocal for himself rather than handing it to a guest singer, and the choice suits Saleem's words, which describe distance rather than protest it: the song is written to sound like someone who has already stopped arguing.

Meaning & Translation

Bebasi is Urdu for helplessness, the particular kind that comes from having no power to change what is already happening. It is not quite sadness and it is not anger; it is the state left over once both have been spent.

Irfan Saleem builds the song around distance rather than blame. The opening line asks kaisi dooriyan, hain kaise faasle, roughly "what distances are these, what gaps are these", and the question is rhetorical: nobody in the song expects the space to close. What follows measures that space instead of arguing with it, which is why the title fits a serial about a young woman who discovers her own history was never hers to arrange.
