The Story Behind Dhoka OST

Dhoka is one of those OSTs where the composer sings his own melody: Naveed Nashad wrote the music and carries the vocal himself, with lyrics by Ali Imran. ARY Digital posted the track on 4 November 2023, three days ahead of the serial's premiere on 7 November, so it arrived as an introduction to the story rather than a souvenir of it.

What it scores is Mehak Nawab's script for director Kashif Saleem, a domestic drama in which one calculated betrayal spreads through several families, with Komal Meer, Affan Waheed, Aagha Ali and Sanam Jung at the centre of it. Nashad keeps the record small, a single voice over three and a quarter minutes, and lets the hook carry the accusation: the title line turns dhoka from an abstract noun into something a specific pair of eyes did to the singer.

Meaning & Translation

Dhoka is Urdu for deceit, the deliberate kind one person works on another rather than plain bad luck, and the song is sung from the wrong end of it. The refrain ARY pulled out for the release, "teri aankhon mein likhi baat se dhoka khaaya", says roughly: I was taken in by what was written in your eyes. The idiom is the point. In Urdu you do not simply get deceived, you eat the deceit, dhoka khaana, and the phrase quietly leaves the swallowing to the person who trusted. Ali Imran keeps the whole complaint at that scale, one look believed and a life rearranged around it.
