The Story Behind Chal Buleya
Chal Buleya is the Sufi heart of Ali Zafar's soundtrack for Total Siyapaa, the 2014 Hindi comedy he headlined opposite Yami Gautam. Zafar composed the entire album and sang this track himself, and it is the one song on the record that needed no lyricist: the words are Bulleh Shah's, the eighteenth-century Punjabi mystic, set rather than rewritten. Kumaar and Aqeel Rubi supplied the verses elsewhere on the album, while here Zafar simply carries the kafi and lets its repeated call do the work a film hook usually does. T-Series released the soundtrack on 14 February 2014, three weeks ahead of Eeshwar Nivas's film, and reviewers called it a charming demonstration of how many jobs Zafar was doing at once. He has kept the song since, performing it alone at the Faisalabad Literary Festival.
Meaning & Translation
The title is Bulleh Shah talking to himself. Come, Bulleya, he says, addressing himself by name as he does throughout his poetry, and what he proposes is an exit: chal othe chaliye, let us go over there. Where? Jithe saare anne, to the place where everyone is blind. It sounds like a curse and is offered as relief. In a society that reads caste, lineage and sect off a person at a glance, blindness is the one condition under which nobody can rank anybody. The lines that follow admit the cost, that no one there will know our family and no one will think much of us either, and the poet takes that trade gladly.
