The Story Behind Megh

Megh brought classical vocalist Aizaz Sohail to Coke Studio Pakistan for his debut on the platform in the final episode of Coke Studio 2020. Sohail wrote its lyrics and leads a contemporary treatment of Raag Megh, the five-note raag he described as closely associated with monsoon rain. Coke Studio leaves the underlying composer's name unknown, while producer and arranger Rohail Hyatt shapes the performance around sustained classical vocal lines. Sitar by Shehroze Hussain, rabab by Nawazish Nasri, eastern percussion by Babar Khanna, bells and ghungroo percussion by Siddhartha Maharjan, and keyboards by Goran Antović give the arrangement its rain-soaked texture. Backing vocalists Wajiha Naqvi, Nimra Rafiq, Kumail Jaffery and Shahab Hussain deepen the gathering-storm atmosphere without displacing Sohail's solo focus.

Meaning & Translation

Megh means cloud, and it also names a Hindustani classical raag associated with the monsoon. The words mix older Hindi, Sanskrit-rooted diction and Urdu as they place a woman in a dark night while her beloved is away. Fear and longing gather around her with the storm clouds. Rain then changes from threat to renewal, welcomed with the beauty and anticipation of a bride's arrival. The refrain does more than describe weather: the monsoon mirrors an emotional passage from loneliness and unease toward wonder, closeness and release. Sohail's sustained phrases stretch that feeling across the raag, turning cloud, thunder and rainfall into images of desire waiting to be answered.
