The Story Behind Pasoori
Pasoori brought Ali Sethi and Shae Gill together for Coke Studio Pakistan's fourteenth season, turning forbidden love into a border-crossing pop anthem. Released in February 2022, it grew from Sethi's response to barriers that kept him from performing in India. He wrote the song with Fazal Abbas and composed it with Xulfi, while Abdullah Siddiqui and Xulfi produced the music. Pasoori is a Punjabi word for a difficult mess, trouble, or complication. Here it describes love trapped by forces outside the lovers' control: they want to meet, but social and political barriers keep pulling them apart. The refrain does not surrender to that separation. Instead, it challenges imposed constraints and asks how anyone can forbid two people from coming together. Punjabi carries most of the song's emotional weight, with Urdu phrases widening its conversational reach.
