The Story Behind Zaroori Tha
The first Pakistani song ever to cross one billion views on YouTube, Zaroori Tha earned its place in streaming history the slow way. Released in June 2014 on Rahat Fateh Ali Khan's album Back 2 Love under Universal Music India, the ballad pairs Sahir Ali Bagga's aching composition with lyrics by Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar, the writer Pakistani drama fans would later know for Meray Paas Tum Ho. Its video cast Gauahar Khan and Kushal Tandon as estranged lovers sharing one silent apartment, and let Rahat's voice carry every unsaid word.
The song crossed a million views within four days of release, then kept compounding for years, finally clearing the billion mark in January 2021. Producer Salman Ahmed's restraint deserves credit too: nothing in the arrangement fights the voice.
Meaning & Translation
Zaroori tha is Urdu for "it was necessary", and the whole song is built on that one devastating idea. Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar's lyric argues with fate in both directions: meeting her, circling her longing the way a pilgrim circles a shrine, giving desire its full orbit, all of it was necessary. But so, the singer concedes, was the scattering of those same desires, the burned last letter, the walking away.
Rahat Fateh Ali Khan sings it not as anger but as acceptance, the voice of a man who has replayed every goodbye and made peace with none of them. It is less a breakup song than a theology of heartbreak, which is why the phrase itself became shorthand for dignified loss.
