The Story Behind Rangrez

Rangrez brings Rahat Fateh Ali Khan into Coke Studio Season 10 for a modern Sufi performance built around Sajid Gul's devotional poetry. Released in Episode 5 in 2017, the track was music-directed by Sahir Ali Bagga and produced by Strings. Its arrangement places Rahat's commanding lead vocal against tabla, a bright shehnai line, harmonium, acoustic guitar, backing voices and a humnawa chorus. Guest players Amir Azhar, Nadeem Iqbal and Adnan Jehanzaib give the studio performance much of its acoustic color, while the ensemble gradually lifts the song from intimate longing into collective devotion. The result is expansive without losing its prayerful center: a long-form performance in which rhythmic momentum and Rahat's sustained vocal phrases make the imagery of color feel almost tangible.

Meaning & Translation

Rangrez literally means a dyer, but in South Asian mystical poetry the figure becomes the beloved, spiritual guide or Divine presence that colors the soul. Sajid Gul's song uses changing hues to describe surrender: union turns the inner self luminous, separation darkens it, and love removes the wish to choose one's own color. The appeal to Nizamuddin Auliya places the imagery in a Sufi devotional tradition, where romance can also express the seeker's bond with a guide and with God. The central prayer is not for a passing emotion, but for a transformation so deep that no hardship or cleansing can make its color fade.
