The Story Behind Rung

Hadiqa Kiani brought "Rung" to Coke Studio Pakistan's fifth season in 2012, placing Amir Khusrau's celebrated Sufi kalam inside a long-form studio arrangement produced by Rohail Hyatt. The performance appeared in the season's third episode and marked Kiani's turn toward the devotional repertoire of the subcontinent. Rather than compressing the piece into a conventional pop song, the version preserves its qawwali-shaped rise while the house band adds progressive weight and changing textures. Kiani's controlled opening gradually gives way to a more ecstatic vocal delivery, matching the poem's movement from recognition to spiritual radiance. At more than nine minutes, the recording lets repetition do its traditional work: each return to the central idea deepens the sense of celebration, making this rendition feel both rooted in shrine culture and unmistakably shaped by the expansive sound of Rohail Hyatt's Coke Studio.

Meaning & Translation

"Rung" means "colour," but in Amir Khusrau's Sufi imagery it is more than a visible hue. It is the transforming colour of spiritual love, the radiance that covers the seeker after meeting the beloved guide. The speaker addresses his mother in wonder, announcing that his world has taken on a new glow through Nizamuddin Auliya. Images of dye and colour suggest a self so thoroughly immersed in devotion that its former identity fades. The repeated celebration therefore carries both joy and surrender: worldly distinctions fall away, while the seeker recognizes divine beauty through the murshid. Hadiqa Kiani's expanding intensity turns that inner change into sound, moving from reverence toward ecstatic release.
