The Story Behind Kaatay Na Katay

Released in 2017 as part of Coke Studio Season 10, Kaatay Na Katay brings Aima Baig, Humera Arshad and Rachel Viccaji together for a charged meeting of rock and semi-classical singing. The session revisits a Nisar Bazmi composition originally sung by Runa Laila for the 1972 Pakistani film Umrao Jaan Ada. Strings produced the performance, while Ali Hamza served as music director and shared lyric credit with Saifuddin Saif. The arrangement thrives on contrast: Baig and Viccaji drive the rock passages, then Arshad answers with supple classical ornamentation. Amir Azhar's mandolin solo, Nadeem's harmonium and Joshua Keyth Benjamin's keyboards add color around the big drums and electric guitars. Rather than treating longing as a quiet lament, the rendition turns it into an animated conversation among three distinct voices.

Meaning & Translation

Kaatay na katay describes time that simply will not pass. In the song, a waiting lover feels each night stretch on because the person she longs for remains absent and unmoved by her pain. The title's repetition turns impatience into a pulse: she cannot escape love, yet she cannot reach the beloved either. Her pleas move between accusation and surrender, asking for mercy, a glimpse and the return of affection. The three vocal approaches sharpen that emotional push and pull. Rock energy makes the frustration feel immediate, while Humera Arshad's semi-classical phrasing gives the older refrain the weight of a familiar lament. It is a song about desire becoming both endurance and torment.
