The Story Behind Aadam

Aadam brings Fareed Ayaz, Abu Muhammad and their Humnawa to Coke Studio Season 12 for a sweeping qawwali built on verses by Hazrat Amir Khusrow. Produced by Rohail Hyatt and released in Episode 3 in November 2019, the performance presents music as a sacred inheritance shared by humankind. Its twelve-minute arc moves through distinct sections, shifting from measured Persian passages toward the warmth and release of Braj devotional poetry and tarana. Handclaps, answering voices and layered accompaniment keep gathering force without rushing the form. The arrangement gives the ensemble room to turn contemplation into dhamaal, the ecstatic movement associated with Sufi devotion. Contemporary coverage singled out Aadam as a highlight of the episode and praised Hyatt's complex layers and smooth transitions.

Meaning & Translation

Aadam is a romanized form of Adam, the first human in the Abrahamic tradition. The qawwali opens with a mystical account of Adam's soul hesitating to enter the body until celestial music draws it in. In this telling, music is not mere entertainment but the force that awakens human life, a divine inheritance carried by everyone. The later passages turn toward the Chishti Sufi tradition, honoring spiritual guides and the ecstatic devotion of dhamaal. Persian reflection broadens into Braj/Hindavi celebration and Arabic blessing, so a sacred origin story becomes a communal prayer. The central idea is that melody joins body, soul and devotion, helping human beings remember their source together.
