The Story Behind Uddi Ja
Uddi Ja introduced Mohsin Abbas Haider to Coke Studio in Season 9, Episode 4, as the singer, lyricist, and original composer of his own Punjabi devotional kalam. Jaffer Zaidi directed the music and Strings produced the 2016 recording. Haider later recalled that the refrain first came to him during a late-night drive, and that the lyrics took about eighteen months to complete, with the final section added years later during the Coke Studio sessions. The arrangement creates an intimate, shrine-like atmosphere around his floating lead vocal, while qawwali undertones deepen its sense of spiritual ascent. The performance became one of the episode's most warmly reviewed moments, and Coke Studio translator Zahra Sabri later singled it out as a rare modern work in the traditional devotional mould.
Meaning & Translation
Uddi Ja means "fly away" or "soar freely" in Punjabi. The command is spiritual rather than literal: the singer urges the self to rise beyond bookish knowledge, pride, empty ritual, and the restless ego. The song places truth within the heart and presents divine love as a boundless sea, reached through humility, remembrance, and a guide's care. Its recurring image of flight turns surrender into freedom. To soar is not to escape the world, but to shed the false self that keeps a seeker distant from God. The qawwali-inflected repetition makes that lesson feel both meditative and insistent, as if each return to the title loosens another attachment.
