The Story Behind Ishq Kinara
Ishq Kinara is a 2013 Coke Studio Season 6 collaboration between Pakistani singer Zoe Viccaji and Turkish vocalist Sumru Ağıryürüyen, produced and arranged by Rohail Hyatt. The performance sets Viccaji's Urdu song beside the traditional Turkish melody “Üsküdar'a Gider İken,” turning two strands of longing into a single cross-cultural conversation. Viccaji carries the central melodic arc, while Ağıryürüyen's darker, weathered tone gives the Turkish passages a haunting pull. A kanun, the Turkish plucked zither heard prominently in the arrangement, adds bright, rippling detail around the voices. Released in Coke Studio's fourth episode of the season, the track embodies that edition's international outlook without losing the intimacy of a love song: its shifts of language feel less like a medley than two memories meeting at the same emotional shore.
Meaning & Translation
The title “Ishq Kinara” joins ishq, an intense or all-consuming love, with kinara, a shore or refuge. In the Urdu verses, the beloved becomes the place where loneliness finds support, yet the singer is also pulled so deeply into love that certainty and self-possession begin to dissolve. The Turkish section, drawn from “Üsküdar'a Gider İken,” shifts the scene to a rain-soaked journey toward Istanbul's Üsküdar district and the remembered figure of a kâtip, or clerk. Placed together, the two languages turn physical travel into emotional passage. Love is both destination and current: it promises shelter, even as surrendering to it can leave the lover unmoored.
