Ranjhna is a 2019 Nescafé Basement Season 5 original written and sung by Shahzad Ali, with music produced by Xulfi. Recorded live for the season's second episode, it brings the tragic world of Heer and Ranjha into a contemporary Punjabi folk setting. Ali stretches phrases into cries of longing, then snaps into quick turns that heighten the narrator's resolve. Meaning & Translation
Ranjhna is an affectionate address to Ranjha, the legendary beloved of the Punjabi romance Heer Ranjha. The narrator speaks as Heer, calling her lover back and asking him to choose their bond over the judgment of the world. As an unwanted wedding closes in, she refuses the future others have arranged and declares that she belongs with Ranjha. The mention of Kaido, Heer's jealous uncle and the tale's antagonist, turns social pressure into a named enemy. Images of poison and the gallows push that promise toward tragedy: separation feels worse than death. The recurring appeal to Ranjha is therefore both a tender invitation and an act of resistance.
