The Story Behind Kashf OST
HUM TV posted Kashf's title song on 5 April 2020, two days before the serial itself went to air, and handed it to a qawwal party rather than to a playback singer. Hamza Akram Qawwal, Taimoor Akram and Abdul Akram both sing it and compose it, three voices billed under one family name, working in the idiom that name belongs to. The text is a Punjabi kafi credited to Shah Hussain, the Lahore Sufi whose verses have carried the longing of Heer and Ranjha for four centuries: an unusually old source for a 2020 drama theme. Danish Nawaz directed the serial for Momina Duraid Production from Imran Nazeer's script, with Hira Mani as a young woman whose dreams keep coming true and a household that learns to trade on them. At two minutes and ten seconds, the recording leaves the three just enough room to pass the refrain between them.
Meaning & Translation
Kashf is an Arabic word Urdu borrowed for unveiling: the moment something hidden is disclosed, and in Sufi usage the knowledge that simply arrives, unasked for. That is precisely the burden the serial hands its heroine, and the song states it in Punjabi rather than in Urdu. Its opening line, "Aj di gal nai Ranjhan aya", says roughly "this is no new matter, Ranjha has come", borrowing the oldest romance in Punjabi verse to make a quietly unsettling point: what you were waiting for is already here, and recognising it is the difficult part. Shah Hussain's kafis work that way throughout, using a lover's complaint to speak about the soul.
