The Story Behind Amrit
Amrit is Meesha Shafi's original 2020 song for the first season of VELO Sound Station, where it arrived in the fifth and final episode. Shafi wrote the song and co-composed it with Farhan Ali and Sherry Khattak, while Bilal Maqsood produced and curated the debut season. The arrangement opens with the delicacy of a lullaby, then widens through children's laughter, spoken word, and a more forceful rhythmic release. That changing texture mirrors the performance's visual movement from blindfolds and chains toward self-possession. Shafi described the work as non-linear poetry about spiritual awakening and liberation, deliberately leaving room for listeners to bring their own experience. Instep included Amrit among its top ten songs of 2020, recognizing an original that joined personal symbolism to a striking audiovisual concept.
Meaning & Translation
Amrit means nectar, especially the immortal or sacred nectar associated with spiritual renewal. Meesha Shafi uses the image as the song's source of inner abundance: light, joy, imagination, and love are found by moving through darkness rather than denying it. The circular imagery suggests a world that can feel enclosed, yet the speaker gradually discovers that liberation begins within. Shafi has described the song as non-linear poetry about nonconformity and spiritual awakening, so its images are intentionally open rather than a single literal narrative. The lullaby-like opening evokes innocence and the inner child; the later laughter, spoken passage, and freer movement turn that fragile calm into self-knowledge. In this reading, Amrit is the life-giving clarity reached after confronting constraint.
