The Story Behind Mushk

Mushk is the title song of HUM TV's 2020 drama serial of the same name, performed by Ali Zafar. Aehsun Talish, who directed the series, wrote its Urdu and Punjabi lyrics, while Naveed Nashaad composed the music. Released shortly before the drama began airing, the soundtrack turns its story of tangled relationships into a compact, emotionally charged theme. Nashaad's melody rises and falls with the words, giving Zafar room to move from restrained sorrow toward a forceful refrain. Contemporary coverage praised the song's balance of tragic feeling and hope, and Mushk later received a Best Original Soundtrack nomination at the 2021 Pakistan International Screen Awards. Its central image of fragrance makes the title linger: even when lovers are separated, memory remains as palpable as scent.

Meaning & Translation

Mushk means musk, a fragrance valued for how long it lingers. The song turns that image into a metaphor for love whose presence survives separation. Its speaker feels abandoned and emotionally broken, yet cannot pull memory away from hope: distance leaves the beloved lodged even more firmly in the heart. Moving between Urdu and Punjabi, the verses dwell on tears, unanswered prayers, loneliness, and the bewilderment of discovering that love can feel like punishment. Fragrance therefore becomes both comfort and wound. It recalls something beautiful, but its persistence makes forgetting impossible. The refrain's grieving love is not presented as weakness; it is the trace of a bond that silence and distance have failed to erase.
